Sundays: Muslim Inventions & Masterminds
The Best of Muslim Inventions and Masterminds is an interactive 8-week journey through the Golden Age of Islam, highlighting the achievements of Muslim scholars in fields such as flight, chemistry, engineering, medicine, and more. From Ibn al-Haytham’s discoveries in optics to Al-Razi’s medical breakthroughs, students will explore the lives of these brilliant minds while creating their own projects. Each session includes a hands-on STEM activity, instructed in a step-by-step way, to deepen understanding and engagement. Designed for ages 8-12, this course nurtures curiosity, connection, and a lasting appreciation for the rich legacy of Islamic civilization. Join us to see how these contributions continue to inspire us today.
TOPICS:
1) Vision & Optics: We learn about the discoveries by Ibn Al-haytham related to vision and the refraction of light. 2) Flight: We learn about Abbas ibn Farnas and make paper helicopters and parachutes. 3) Engineering: We learn about the Banu Musa brothers and their ingenious devices and make our own trick gadget. 4) Glass Art & Dev: We learn about developments in glass for vision, chemistry, and art, and make our own painted glass vase. 5) Chess & Strategy: We learn how Muslims revolutionized the ancient game and make our own board. 6) Clocks & Sundials: We learn about Ismail Al - Jazairi and his advancements in time telling and make our own clock. 7) Libraries & The House of Wisdom: In class seven, we learn about early libraries and the famous The House of Wisdom and make our own book! 8) Herbs & Medicine: We learn about herbal applications and Ibn Sina, we then make our own floral diagram with paper.
